A skin chemical peel is an exfoliation method that can improve the appearance of skin on the face, neck and the backs of hands. The chemical peel is applied to the skin and causes the top layers of skin to blister and peel off. This process encourages the skin to have a more youthful appearance.
Different types of chemical peel are used for different skin complaints. Each type of skin peel is available in different strengths. Chemical peels are derived from plant based substances and are known as organic acids. All chemical peels encourage the healing cascade which forms new skin proteins and skin surfaces.
Alpha-hydroxy acid is commonly used as a skin peel to encourage new collagen formation over several visits. Suited for light wrinkles and uneven skin appearance, AHA encourages collagen formation, improving the texture of the skin surface. Commonly known as a “light peel”, superficial skin peels have a shorter recovery time than other deeper, anti-aging skin peels.
Beta-hydroxy acid [BHA] is a large oil soluble molecule, suited for oily, acne prone skin. It is commonly referred to as salicylic acid and is a common ingredient in acne skin treatments. In higher concentrations, BHA is used as a skin peel to slough off dead skin cells that can build up, contributing to skin complaints such as acne, blackheads, whiteheads and uneven skin.
Trichloroacetic acid [TCA] is a bioactive substance that stimulates the production of large molecules such as collagen. TCA is used to resurface the texture of the skin, particularly in anti-aging skin treatments that target wrinkles, sun damage and age spots. It is a medium depth peel, with a longer recovery time than other peels.
Enerpeel technology is an effective new chemical peel delivery method, penetrating deeper without traumatising superficial skin layers. Enerpeel acids hold onto their active molecules until they reach the right skin depth, releasing them into the effective area. This targeted chemical peel delivery system reduces skin trauma, meaning less redness and skin flaking. Enerpeel can be used on a variety of skin issues such as aging skin, acne, uneven skin pigmentation and scarring.
Using a chemical peel for acne has been successful in reducing the appearance and occurrence of acne by 50%. Results from one skin peel last a few months, so regular peels should be used to maintain the results. Use chemical peels in conjunction with a skin care regimen targeted for acne. These treatments improve the appearance of acne prone skin, increasing confidence and reducing the risk of scarring.
Chemical peels have been used for over 50 years to treat common complaints about skin including; wrinkles, uneven skin tone, dryness, and sun damage. Using a chemical peel for face appearance is an alternative to laser treatments and works well when combined with a suitable skin care routine.
A chemical peel can be done quickly and recovery times from light peels can be much shorter than laser skin treatments.
This cosmetic treatment may be useful for individuals with facial blemishes, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, acne, sun damage, sun spots, freckles and fine lines.
About two to three weeks before a chemical peel, you should prepare the skin by cleansing it twice a day, applying a special moisturizer and sunscreen. As prescribed by your dermatologist take tretinoin (Retin-A) every day.
First the skin is thoroughly cleansed with an agent that will remove excess oils, whilst protecting the hair and skin. Depending on your skin type and condition, the chemical peel solution can be applied to the entire face or specific regions. These include the crow’s feet area or near the nose. The chemical peel is applied with a sponge or cotton pad. The dermatologist carefully observes the skin and, based on the changes, determines how long the solution should stay on.
The best chemical peel is one that has been tailored to your skin goals and needs. Each patient has their own expectations— from subtle results to dramatic effects— and discussing what you want to get out of cosmetic treatments will help you achieve the best chemical peel. Our dermatologist and skincare nurse can discuss the best chemical peel option with you and assess your individual needs.
Gentle skin care after chemical peel treatment is vital. The skin has been sensitized and beautiful, new skin is rapidly forming. The skin may have a sun burnt appearance for the days following the procedure. Avoid excessive skin irritants during the after chemical peel phase, avoid over washing, and use skin care products especially for sensitized skin.
Skin that is healing has reduced protection from the damaging effects of the sun. After a chemical peel, your skin is at higher risk of sun damage and requires additional protection for up to fourteen days following treatment. Always include a sensitive, high SPF sunscreen in your skin care routine, and cover up in, or try to avoid the sun.
After chemical peel treatments, as the skin has been sloughed off and sensitized, it is at risk of dehydration. Adequate hydration provides skin cells with the water they need for normal cell metabolism. In conjunction with a skin care regime, drink plenty of water to maintain skin hydration to assist with healing.
